Dear Friends of CASI,
First and foremost, in honor of those who share our ongoing commitment to improve our Southern Indiana communities, we are proud to present our 3rd Annual Makers of Change Awards. It is with great pleasure that we extend congratulations to the award recipients for the fantastic work they have accomplished to help improve the lives of others.
As always, we want to thank all of you for your support of our mission, “To support and empower families and community to reach self-sufficiency”. Strong community support results in a sound foundation for us to serve those who are in the most need within our region.
In late 2017, Covering Kids and Families (CKF) of Indiana learned that Community Action of Southern Indiana already had an experienced staff of health navigators who were eager to continue to share their wealth of knowledge and with those who needed it most, people without health coverage. CKF of Indiana contacted us to see how we could partner and continue to cover areas in Southern Indiana with access to affordable healthcare. CASI is very proud of the partnership we have formed with CKF of Indiana and our coalition in Southern Indiana is growing strong. We are working together to educate our communities and provide services that support the fact that everyone deserves and should have access to affordable healthcare coverage.
Thus far, 2018 has been an exciting year at CASI. We were recently awarded an Ameri-Corps grant to expand our existing Life Literacy Academy (LLA) Program. As a direct result of this funding, we are adding ten (10) AmeriCorps members to assist our LLA Program Manager with the outreach of this program. Life Literacy Academy is a youth program designed to follow a select group of students from grades 8-12. Youth are monitored in areas of character, education, leadership, critical thinking and college readiness. This program has proven to be very effective in helping adolescents deal with everyday life and to also learn how to better utilize their free time, which enables them make better life decisions. Our LLA Program is currently operating within a total of five (5) school districts within Clark, Floyd and Scott counties.
Finally, we are very happy to share the news that Community Action of Southern Indiana is going to have a place to call its permanent home. The Spring Hill Elementary School building will be the new home of CASI, once Greater Clark County Schools transition students to their new school within the next couple of years. We are truly excited about this opportunity!
In conclusion, we want to thank each and every one of you for helping us recognize and celebrate the 2018 Makers of Change. Every day we have the opportunity to make a positive difference in other people’s lives, from offering a simple smile to helping them financially. We can all be Makers of Change!
