Executive Directors Message
Phil-Ellis-Executive-Director-CASI Dear Friends of CASI, First and foremost, in honor of those who share our ongoing commitment to improve our Southern Indiana communities, we are proud to present our 3rd Annual Makers of Change Awards. It is with great pleasure that we extend congratulations to the award recipients for the fantastic work they have accomplished to help improve the lives of others. As always, we want to thank all of you for your support of our mission, “To support and empower families and community to reach self-sufficiency”. Strong community support results in a sound foundation for us to serve those who are in the most need within our region. In late 2017, Covering Kids and Families (CKF) of Indiana learned that Community Action of Southern Indiana already had an experienced staff of health navigators who were eager to continue to share their wealth of knowledge and with those who needed it most, people without health coverage. CKF of Indiana contacted us to see how we could partner and continue to cover areas in Southern Indiana with access to affordable healthcare. CASI is very proud of the partnership we have formed with CKF of Indiana and our coalition in Southern Indiana is growing strong. We are working together to educate our communities and provide services that support the fact that everyone deserves and should have access to affordable healthcare coverage. Thus far, 2018 has been an exciting year at CASI. We were recently awarded an Ameri-Corps grant to expand our existing Life Literacy Academy (LLA) Program. As a direct result of this funding, we are adding ten (10) AmeriCorps members to assist our LLA Program Manager with the outreach of this program. Life Literacy Academy is a youth program designed to follow a select group of students from grades 8-12. Youth are monitored in areas of character, education, leadership, critical thinking and college readiness. This program has proven to be very effective in helping adolescents deal with everyday life and to also learn how to better utilize their free time, which enables them make better life decisions. Our LLA Program is currently operating within a total of five (5) school districts within Clark, Floyd and Scott counties. Finally, we are very happy to share the news that Community Action of Southern Indiana is going to have a place to call its permanent home. The Spring Hill Elementary School building will be the new home of CASI, once Greater Clark County Schools transition students to their new school within the next couple of years. We are truly excited about this opportunity! In conclusion, we want to thank each and every one of you for helping us recognize and celebrate the 2018 Makers of Change. Every day we have the opportunity to make a positive difference in other people’s lives, from offering a simple smile to helping them financially. We can all be Makers of Change! Sincerely, Phil Ellis Executive Director We welcome any donations, large or small. Please contact me at 812-288-6451 ext. 2144 or pellis@casi1.org . Phil Ellis, Executive Director/ CEO

  • Mr. Leon,

I want to thank you and early head start making the flyers. It got everybody helping out and also being a great teacher to my son. I was able to do first eye and it was a miracle because I can see my kids. I will be able to get the other eye done. Thanks for being part of this miracle and making it come true.”

  • Ms. B joined the IDA program as a single parent with three children.

Her dream was to get a degree so she could have a better life for her children and to one day own her own home. Letita saved $400.00 each year for a total of $1600. And the IDA program was able to match her $4800. over the four year program. She continued to save and addition $2000. over the four years to assist her in reaching those goals. Through the IDA program she received over 12 hours of financial counseling, 6 hours of pre-purchase counseling, 2 hours of predatory lending and credit reduction and 8 hours of homeownership counseling for a total of 28 hours of training toward reaching her asset goal of purchasing her home.

Ms. B was able to close on her new home in November, using her IDA funds and was also able to take advantage of a $2,000 credit for home purchases.

During the four years she was also able to attend Indiana University Southeast as a part-time student and her IDA funds provided her assistance paying for books and fees.

After 4 years of savings and receiving matches, completing 12 hours of financial literacy training and thirteen weeks of small business development training at Community Action of Southern IN. we was ready to help pay the tuition for our son and expand our struggling business. The training provided by CASI’s IDA program showed us the things we needed to correct in our spending habits and gave us the knowledge to manage our business.

A portion of their savings was used for education expenses for their son Colin who attended Southern Virginia University. The remaining savings was used to pay expenses for a small business they started in Charlestown, Indiana. “The Charlestown Skate Shack” is a retail skate board shop that caters to the Youth and Young Adults in the Charlestown Indiana and surrounding communities. The store provides boards, accessories and concessions to those attending the local skate board park in the city.

Thanks CASI, you was there when we needed you most

  • “Jerri said if it we not for the IDA program she would be on the streets after she lost her job.”

Jerri has participated in the IDA programs and microenterprise trainings since 2008, to date she has received 4 years of 3:1 matches. Her goal at inception was to pay for education expenses for her 2 daughters that attended IUS. A portion of her savings has done just that. She decided also to use some of her savings/match funds to start a small business, grooming dog from her home in Pekin, Indiana.

She successfully graduated from our 13 week micro-enterprise class so she would be eligible to use her IDA funds for her business “Klassic K-9 Grooming by Jerri”

Recently, she used a portion of her savings to purchase inventory to expand her business as a mobile grooming business.

Jerri, was laid off from her regular job and is very thankful to have participated in the IDA program and the Micro-Enterprise program. Her business has continued to grow and is giving her the capital needed to pay her mortgage and other bills. Jerri continues to run her business successfully and never returned to the job she was laid off from
